Penny pinchers

My daughter told me this one, and I couldn't resist the temptation to put it up:

What is the definition of a miser? ... Someone who, when his house is on fire, gives a missed call to the fire brigade.

Ha-ha-ha.

I thought I could find something to add or remember something but there's nothing that's come for the whole day that's as short and sweet and timely as the miser's 'missed call' to the fire brigade (it did take me some long, painful minutes to figure it out though - oops).

I suddenly remembered a funny incident though...but this comment has already gotten too long!

I have never understood the 'missed call' phenomenon. It seems to be huge in India. Some people communicate exclusively via missed calls. In some cases there are legitimate economic reasons behind this behavior but i have looked closely and found that the 'missed call' phenomenon transcends economic boundaries. There are a lot of middle class and well to do people who engage in this ridiculous behavior. Devang Patel's "Hum Indians kuchch aise hi hote hain" song does put everything into perspective for me even though its tone may be considered by some to be a little crude.
