Joy maa Durga

Durga pujo has arrived again. An excuse for millions to gorge, splurge, dress up, preen, make noise, run around like beheaded hens, quarrel furiously with all and sundry in the course of having fun - and, most importantly, shirk work more or less for a whole month.

Yay.........!

I just decided not to entertain any comments here from anyone who has never commented on any one of my posts in the last whole year. And notwithstanding all the 'romantic' and 'nostalgic' associations, I am glad that the horror will be over in another day's time.

The day I treasure most is Mahalaya. The morning of Mahalaya is distinct from each of the other 364 or 365 in the entire year. The memory of getting up early to hear the Durga Saptashati recitation over the radio is something I hold very dear to my heart. Somehow, that magic can never be recreated anywhere except in Bengal.

Sir ,
As you had said earlier , the Durga Puja really is 'Bengal's annual madness' .Kolkata made me understand that very well !

I was born on Mahalaya day, Anand, so I should have had a specially sentimental attachment with it. So I did, upto my late twenties. Now it bores me stiff - the years flit by so fast that every Mahalaya and pujo only arouses irritable surprise: 'What, again? So soon?'

And Debotosh, all I care about is that another pujo has passed without some people I knew dying of strokes or accidents because of over-indulgence in high living. I have seen too many, and unlike most people who gush over the 'dhaak and dhuno and kaashphul' stuff, I remember that sort of thing too painfully...

Yey...Yey!!! - I did not have the chance to say this 'Y' word this year. As it is, I had already taken a month's leave and my leave balance had expired. I would have to go in for LWP(Leave without pay) if I had decided to take another leave, which I am not ready to do unless something goes seriously wrong. Durga Pujo will come next year again. I felt sad though, because this year I could not meet my cousins, all of them together. I will not be able to take leave during the Kali Pujo also.

Anyway, better luck next time - waiting to say 'Yey' for approximately 10 days next year...
