Fifty shades of nightsoil

Abhirup has been urging me to comment on the ongoing global phenomenon of 50 Shades of Grey for a long time. I won't: I consider it infra dig. But he has supplied me with a cartoon that says virtually all I wanted to say, so I have pasted it here (you might want to zoom out in order to read the text clearly...)

If you still can't read the text, try this link. And you can also go to google images and find out more stuff of the same sort by typing in the key words '50 shades of grey cartoons'.  I am frankly delighted that women all over the world, by buying the books by the tens of millions, have openly admitted just what they are like, as the man in the above cartoon says to his wife.

Hahaha. That cartoon is brilliant. I was scanning the cartoons yesterday late evening sometime, and thougth I could find something to send with my comment. I wish somebody would come up with a cartoon of what the feminists are saying about and/or doing with this 50 shades. That would be delicious. I couldn't find any.

I've been having to agree more and more with the Republican position with its 'war on women' over these last few days (although the whole thing felt terribly absurd not barely a week ago), and with the material you've been telling me about and telling me to read, and I've been thinking about and writing, and with this 50 shades business...Now I appreciate even better why the genie in the joke told the man what he did when the man wanted to know "what do women really want..?" I got so annoyed with not being able to see the connection of why women in millions were reading it and the general pov that I woke myself up in the middle of the night. But thank you. With what you were telling me one day, the mushroom of a thought of writing why that book's been selling among women did rise in my head. I think this 50 shades business rather plainly corroborates what you wrote in that 'wife beating...' post of yours too actually...

As for the "bad boy" bit from the cartoon - I'm now thinking that this probably explains why the post of yours, 'No women, please, I am an MCP' went up to the most read posts in such a short time. I'm almost absolutely sure that women are clicking on that post by the droves wondering about this man who so suavely declares he is a male chauvinist. Pity they never dare to comment with their full and real names...and maybe this explains why so many other posts of yours where you've actually talked about admirable women or where you've over and over again sympathized about women's condition are never visited by them, and for some of the rest of your posts they simply want to fight with you over nothing.

Yech for the title although its terribly appropriate...

Shilpi, thanks.

There's been tens of millions of comments on this subject on thousands of websites, but when I write about it, no one else wants to stick out his or her neck? How odd...
