Humorists in short supply

It may be I'm getting short-sighted, but I have been having this strong feeling that the world is becoming, despite all its vaunted progress, a 'rum sort of place', as P.G. Wodehouse might have said. I don't expect a Jerome K. Jerome or a Sukumar Ray to be born every other day, but given the fact that so many different kinds of 'talents' are jostling with one another on the world's stage, from fabulous tennis stars to awesome software developers and fund-managers and cocktail-mixers, where are the people who can make us laugh (if you leave out the determinedly pedestrian sort, like Mr. Bean or our home-grown Mir)?

Sir,
In this case,I can only say that we have no option left but to hope that humorists like P.G.Wodehouse,Roald Dahl, and people like Charlie Chaplin reappear and enchant our life.
I just wonder that how come people "The common herds" accept the roadside stuffs like Mr.Bean and Mir after they (I suppose) have seen movies of Charlie Chaplin or at least have read Abol Tabol.
From this incident,I am reminded of Alexander's Words:"Sotyo Selucus.....ki bichitro ei Desh"!!

...why do I keep leaping up and down asking and then hollering "Please write some bits here. Please write some bits here..."? Why do I keep returning to old posts and older ones here and on your other blog when I badly need a good laugh?
I know we don't share the same sense of humour - but I feel the same way: there aren't enough humourists around and/or the ones who are still around don't (and sometimes won't/can't) write enough.
Bad luck I guess for everyone.
Take care.

Dear Sir,

I think that its just a minority of people, like you and some others who follow up on your blog daily, who feel that there is a dearth of humorists these days...

The majority are very happy with the slip shod and crass 'entertainment' that they get via T.V. Personally I have felt that people of my age (16-17) find it more convenient to watch some comedy shows on the television rather than opening a book of P.G. Wodehouse or Roald dahl, just to name a few authors here. They don't find the books humorous. They find it dull and lengthy and more horribly boring! Where is the time for books? I mean there are far more important things to do than reading a humorous story book. Like twittering on twitter, gorging on soaps and serials and so on and so forth...

Why is it that only few people feel the need for humorists with substance and not just people with a lousy sense of humour cracking silly cheap jokes(that sometimes includes needless caricatures of men like Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rituporno Ghosh etc, who have achieved far more than any of the "humorists" will ever be able to manage!)?

Is it because that the sense of humour have evolved and has been reduced to leery jokes? Is it because such things are "in fasion"? Why is it if you are branded as a ninny when you can't understand some crude jokes cracked by your "friends"?

There might be some people who have the talent to write humorous books and articles. But maybe to keep up with the haute humour of the present generation they have to write the regular nonsensical agenda for the "the common herd", of which even I am no exception, to laugh their heads off!

With regards
Anwesha.

You don't need to denigrate yourself, Anwesha. If you belonged to the common herd, you woulnd't have been reading this stuff!
